Chrissy Horan - Freelance Writer and Running Enthusiast - Episode 275

Episode 275 - Chrissy Horan - Freelance Writer and Running Enthusiast

“For me, running became a kind of game…I ran to the next bridge….then the next…” “My favorite part of the Boston Marathon…it sends the tingle up your spine.”

“...I first started writing a blog…but I love writing human interest stories…” Chrissy Horan

In today’s episode of the Two Fit Crazies and a Microphone Podcast, let’s welcome running enthusiast and freelance writer, Chrissy Horan. Chrissy, a Long Island native, who also happens to be Christine’s childhood volleyball teammate, is here to share how her unexpected love for running led her to become an experienced marathon runner, volunteer, fundraiser and freelance writer. Chrissy, a former obesity researcher, claims to have always “dreaded running” until she moved to Boston in 2000 and began running along the historic Charles River. For Chrissy, her competitive nature enabled her to turn her running into “a kind of game,” running just a little farther each run. Fast forward, Chrissy Horan has established herself as a runner who not only takes pride in raising funds and awareness for charities such as the Alzheimer’s Association, but also writing about current research and human interest stories related to the sport. Chrissy’s articles have been featured in Runner’s World, the Boston Globe, Women’s Running and Boston.com. In fact, she even wrote an amazing evidence-based article shedding light on the benefits of running to fight Rheumatoid Arthritis that featured a cameo by one of the “Fit

Crazies.” Learn more about Chrissy Horan and read her latest blogs and articles at www.ChrissyHoran.com.

Christine Runs 100 Miles! - Episode 231

Episode 231 - Christine Runs 100 Miles!

“To finish a 100 mile race, it’s not about physical toughness…it’s about mental toughness and

mindset.”

“There was never a doubt in my mind that I would not finish…the key was to find a wolfpack and stick together…we promised each other we would all finish.” - Christine

What must it be like to run 100 miles? In this episode, the Two Fit Crazies bring you the long-awaited recap of the C and O Canal 100 Mile Race! Sit back and take in all the craziness as Brian asks Christine how she got her hands on one of the most coveted prizes in the ultra-endurance world, a finishers belt buckle. Listen up as Christine dishes out the wild details of what goes into completing an ultra-endurance race. From gathering a loyal crew, eating a pound of bacon, climbing muddy cliffs in pitch black pouring rain, to spotting black bear cubs and dealing with hallucinations, you will want to run out and sign up for the next ultra-event near you. That may be a bit of a lie after you hear about the toenail casualties and the fact that over half of the athletes that showed up at the starting line never finished. Also, hear a huge shout out to Angel Bob, Dr. Mindy, Shannon, and Marley the Puppy for being the best crew in the world, and of course Mike Conti! Wait until you hear about how Christine’s husband stepped up in the middle of a cold rainy night to pace her in for the last 30 miles. That goodness for old school rap music!

If you have yet to hear of the amazing Peter Twist, you are in for a HUGE treat! Peter, or Coach Twist, shares his story of growing up in Canada, falling in love with team sports at an early age, and becoming the very first strength and conditioning coach for the NHL. From hockey, to baseball, to tennis, to football, to mountain biking, to skiing, to ocean kayaking, to trail running, Peter was always fascinated with movement. However, after attaining a master’s degree in coaching science, he soon realized that he didn’t want to be a head coach of a sports team, but that he wanted to be a strength and conditioning coach to mold athletes through developing their speed, agility, strength, balance, flexibility and more. Peter was a visionary when it came to understanding the importance of plyometrics and functional exercise to improve the “whole” athlete. Peter discusses the process of turning his dreams into a reality through his determination and mindset practices that not only landed him the job as the first NHL strength and conditioning coach, but also a “cancer crusher.” It is no wonder that Peter Twist is a highly coveted world-renowned speaker whose resilience and passion for changing lives is unparalleled. Be on the lookout for Peter Twist’s upcoming books and continuing education courses! “I was only 14-years-old, and I was not like other kids...I was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis...I had to rely on medicine…I was not going to give up.”

“...exercise and eating better makes me feel good.” - Logan Muller (18-years-old & Rheumatoid arthritis WARRIOR!)

This episode of the Two Fit Crazies & A Microphone Podcast is very special. Today, you will hear from Logan Muller, who is joined by her mother Linda Muller, for an in-studio interview that will pull at your heartstrings. Logan, the recipient of the 2020 Two Fit Crazies & A Microphone Scholarship, presented through the Brick Township Chamber of Commerce, shares her powerful story of perseverance and determination to overcome and triumph over her juvenile rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis as a young teenager. Logan, a super sweet, intelligent, “old-soul,” as her mother lovingly refers to her, endured years of physical and emotional obstacles and many times of uncertainty. From long trips to and from her specialists, to undergoing various chemo treatments in an attempt to put her disease into remission, Logan was able to remain focused on her schoolwork and even managed to make it to the Cheerleading World Championships three times where she earned an 11th place ranking! Logan is wise beyond her years as she proves while discussing the impact that eating a healthy diet, exercise and a positive mindset has had on her ability to reduce flare-ups and feel good. Everyone needs to take notes on this one!

Finally, the Two Fit Crazies fill in Logan on their 40-mile run for Christine’s 40th birthday to benefit her scholarship and how Logan must now continue her journey to inspire others through her story! Logan will be attending Seton Hall University this fall where she has already been accepted to a 6-year occupational therapy program.
