Joining the show from Dallas, Texas, although originally from the Netherlands, Elian shares her amazing story of how her love for dance, movement, and fitness lead her to overcome some of the most difficult moments in her life. After attending a dance academy in Amsterdam as a child and later earning a degree in Art/Theatre History from the University of Amsterdam, Elian shares how her love for movement led her to seek a career in dance. Elian talks about the impact that fitness icons such as Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons inspired her to become certified to teach  fitness, but as Elian delves into her own journey of self-discovery, she discusses how  losing both of her parents and moving to the U.S. for an short-lived marriage, lead  her to “hit rock bottom.” Surprisingly, there was a time when all that Elian owned was what she carried in her backpack and the “things” she took to mask her pain.  Elian reveals how her love for fitness saved her life and inspired her to create Better Body Basics, her fitness studio, outside of Dallas, Texas. In addition, Elian now serves as a teacher at the Addiction Campus of America where she infuses mindful and movement practices to patients who are fighting to overcome addiction. Jesse joins the best “party” in the world to shed some light on how to build your “life’s resume.” Through Jesse’s ability to think BACKWARDS, he then was able to “write the end of the movie...but then you just have to write the script.” This seemed to work for Jesse Itzler since he first made a name for himself as a rapper on MTV in the 1990’s. Since then, Jesse went on to write the theme song for the New York Knicks, found Marquis Jets, own Zico Coconut Water, and even own the Atlanta Hawks. Although Jesse’s “life resume” is super impressive, Jesse is someone who “walks the walk.” He is a true giver and believes in the power of relationships, but he also believes that, at the end of the day, we all want the same thing: “we want to feel good!”

In this episode, Jesse shares his insight on the importance of fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness as it relates to happiness and success. Even after living with David Goggins for a month and then living with monks, Jesse continues to crave new experiences. In Episode 99, the Two Fit Crazies are left speechless from the most amazingly inspirational story of one man’s battle for survival after being hit by a 40-ton bus on the streets of New York City at 5:30AM on December 22nd, 2005. With a 1% chance for survival even after receiving over 68 units of blood, Matt Long was not about to give up. As a NYC firefighter, triathlete, marathoner, and IRONMAN at the time of the accident, Matt discusses how his elite fitness level “literally” saved his life. Although Matt champions an “I WILL” attitude, he also shares what it was like to wish his mother had prayed for him to die instead of having to endure the slow and painful process of rehabilitating a body that was practically sliced in two. Unbelievably, Matt not only survived the day he and his bicycle were crushed beneath the 10” space between a charter bus and the asphalt, but also recalls the mental journey to recovery! After more than 40 operations and years of rehabilitation, Matt has since returned to the New York City Marathon, IRONMAN Lake Placid, cycling, and even holds 8 world records for the indoor rower! Matt also discuss his inspirational book, The Long Run, as well as his love for public speaking engagements and why he decided to be a franchisee for Orangetheory Fitness. Prepare to be inspired!

Roberta Groner - World Class Runner/Full Time Nurse/Mother of Three - Episode 96

Episode 96 – Roberta Groner – World Class Runner – Full Time Nurse – Mother of 3

In Episode 96 the Fit Crazies have the honor of rapping with the ridiculously fast and remarkably humble Super Mom, Roberta Groner, age 41, of Randolph, NJ. Literally, just 2 hours off the plane home, Roberta gives us the low down on her phenomenal, news making 2:29:06, 5th place performance against a world class field at the Rotterdam Marathon.

To put it simply, Roberta has a story for the ages. After competitive high school and, albeit shortened, collegiate careers, running went away. Roberta spent the next decade building her career in nursing and starting a family. But a flame was rekindled after joining some office cohorts and running the Pittsburg Half Marathon just 10 years ago. This led to a marathon in Chicago and an impressive 3-hour 12-minute (3:12) debut. But she was just getting started, a Sub 3 hour run in her second marathon was followed by races in the 2:40’s and then a true burst onto the scene with her 2:37 victory at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in 2016. Just Flying!!!!

All of this, along with a 2:30:38, 3rd place finish at the California International Marathon in 2017 has stamped Roberta’s place among the nation’s and world’s elites.

In fact, we’d bet that if the 41-year-old, full time nurse, divorced mother of three had rubbed a lamp and was granted running wishes, Roberta probably would have sold herself short in what she wished for.

What’s it like to run a 2:29 and an IAAF/Olympic Standard?

At 41 years of age, while still working full time and a divorced mother of three, how does she fit it all in?

NJAHPRED MISSION STATEMENT:

NJAHPRED is dedicated to advancing quality health education, physical education, recreation, dance education, and athletics through professional development, programming, advocacy, and collegial exchange. The Association promotes the development of healthy active lifestyles for New Jersey’s students, educators and community members.   

In Episode 90, the Two Fit Crazies were on location in Long Branch, New Jersey as special guests at the 100th Anniversary of the NJAHPRED Convention! From 1919-2019, Physical Educators from across the state of New Jersey and beyond have gathered to share best practices, learn from the top health, physical education, recreation and dance professionals in the county, and reignite their passion for changing lives. In this episode, the Two Fit Crazies provide a platform for current P.E. teachers to have a LOUDER voice. This podcast is a CALL TO ACTION! Listen to current educators as they delve into these powerful questions: What is working? What is NOT working? What is the solution? Their answers speak for themselves. Education is power! In Episode 88, 13-years after Christine first moved to the Jersey shore and heard of this living legend, the Two Fit Crazies got fired up talking with a true “fire-breathing dragon” by the name of TODD DURKIN. Todd, a native to the Jersey shore, opens up about overcoming incredible adversity through his ability to run at fear, remain purpose-driven, and view his experiences as part of his necessary journey to find his purpose. In this incredibly moving episode, Todd explains how his obedience and drive propelled him from an under-privileged boy in Brick, New Jersey to one of the top 100 greatest health and fitness influencers of all time! Todd discusses the importance of “filling up your well” and taking care of yourself on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. This, Todd proclaims, is one of his keys to success and remaining grounded.

Todd also talks about what it is like to train top NFL and MLB players as well as the people he looks to for strength and guidance. From training pro-athletes, giving keynote speeches, writing books, recording live social media content, and inspiring the world, Todd Durkin is a truly amazing human being. This episode will inspire you to “RUN AT YOUR FEAR!”

As a self-proclaimed “lazy” teenager who enjoyed making less than desirable choices, Danielle speaks of her first experiences in cosmetology school where she fell in love with making people feel better about themselves. Soon after, Danielle tells of being drawn into the world of fitness and later going on to earn her personal training and CrossFit™ certification and opening her very own Crossfit ™ Affiliated gym with her father. After a successful run as business owner/entrepreneur, Danielle transitioned into the online nutrition and fitness coaching business where her focus is on “flexible nutrition!” In this world of “fad diets,” Danielle now prides herself on educating others on macro-nutrients, caloric needs, and fitness! We talk everything from Crossfit ™, to nutrition, to eye lashes!

In Episode 81, the Two Fit Crazies had the honor of speaking with the great Bart Yasso. Affectionately known as the “Mayor of Running”, Bart goes deep into his journey and life in running. Recently retired after 21 years at Runner’s World where he held the title of Chief Running Officer, Bart takes us from his first run in “cutoff jeans and a Budweiser t-shirt” to the “world’s toughest footrace” through Death Valley to a 5k in a nudist colony. And an interview with Bart would never be complete without getting the lowdown on the famous workout created by and named for him – the Yasso 800s, stating that “There isn’t a day that someone doesn’t mention Yasso 800’s.”

Bart is an incredibly genuine person with a passion for running and life. It felt like we were old friends catching up after some time apart. An inspiration to all that cross his path, we hope that you enjoy this episode as much as we did.
